Snail Mail Club UX Tips: Gifts & International Orders
Practical guidance for anyone planning or running a mail club, covering gift options, payments, and overseas delivery.
The first guide explored the experience from discovering your club page to opening the envelope. Here, we’ll take a closer look at gifts and international orders, where buyers and recipients may need a little more guidance to understand what to expect.
If you already offer either option or are considering it, this guide shares practical ways to make ordering and receiving your mail easier. You can choose the ideas that fit your club and what you can comfortably support.
01Make gifting easy for buyers and recipients
The person buying a gift handles the order, but someone else opens the envelope. Clear guidance helps the buyer understand what they’re giving and helps the recipient enjoy it, even if they’ve never visited your club page.
What could help
Make gift options easy to find and understand
Label gift options clearly, for example, “Give this as a gift,” so visitors can spot them. Explain what each gift option includes and how long it lasts. If you offer different gift durations, show the number of deliveries and price in the same format so buyers can compare their options. State whether the gift ends automatically or renews, and who will be charged if it continues.
Buyers may be planning around a birthday or another occasion. Share when the first envelope is expected to be mailed and, where possible, an estimated delivery window so they can decide whether the timing works for their gift.
Separate the buyer’s details from the recipient’s
Where you ask for contact or delivery details, make it clear whether to enter the buyer’s or the recipient’s information. This helps the mail and any order messages reach the right person.
Explain who will receive receipts, welcome messages, or mailing updates. If a message will reach the recipient before the gift arrives, let the buyer know before they place the order so they can plan around it if they want to keep the gift a surprise.
Make the gift easy to enjoy
The gift may be the recipient’s first experience of your club. Where possible, let the buyer include their name and a personal message. A short note can make the gift feel more thoughtful and meaningful, while letting the recipient know who it’s from.
The recipient may not have the instructions or access details sent to the buyer. If the gift requires activation or an account to access online extras, explain this before purchase and include simple instructions with the gift. Make sure the recipient can use those extras without the buyer’s login.
02Make international ordering easier
Visitors ordering from another country need to understand how your club will work for them, from payment and delivery to the language of the mail. Clear information and a checkout that works for buyers in the countries you serve help them decide whether to order and complete their purchase.
What could help
Help visitors understand the price
Showing prices in a familiar currency helps visitors understand the cost without having to convert it themselves. If your platform supports this, make the currency selector easy to find. Let visitors change any automatically selected currency, since it may not be the one they want to use. If you display prices in only one currency, identify it clearly—for example, USD rather than just $.
If you show an estimated conversion but charge in a different currency, explain this alongside the price so visitors don’t mistake the estimate for the amount they’ll be charged. Before payment, clearly show the final total and the currency they’ll pay in. If recipients may need to pay import duties or taxes on arrival, explain this before purchase, including who is responsible for those charges.
Make essential information easy to read
Visitors browsing in another language need enough information to decide whether your club is right for them. If you offer other languages, make the language selector easy to find. Include key details in the selected language—what’s included, where you ship, and how the subscription works.
Keep essential information in page text rather than only in images, so visitors can use browser translation tools when you don’t offer their language.
Set expectations for international delivery
Where possible, share an estimated delivery window for international mail, measured from when the envelope is sent. This helps buyers judge whether the timing works for them without mistaking delivery time for the full wait from placing an order.
Say whether tracking is included and when to get in touch if the mail hasn’t arrived. Without tracking, knowing when to check in gives buyers a useful next step while they wait.
Check that overseas buyers can complete an order
Someone may understand your offer and be ready to buy, only to get stuck entering their address or paying. Address, postcode, and phone number formats vary between countries, so a form that works for local buyers may not work for someone abroad. Test checkout for the countries you serve to make sure buyers can enter their details and have a supported way to pay.
Help more people enjoy your mail
A gift can introduce someone to your club, and international shipping can let someone farther away enjoy your work. Clear guidance helps buyers understand what they’re giving or ordering, while thoughtful details help recipients enjoy what arrives. Even one clearer detail can make the experience easier for someone discovering your work for the first time.
